Our pastor, Phillip Skipworth, is a native of Florence. He is a graduate of Coffee High School and attended the University of North Alabama. He married Sonya Bartlett Skipworth in 1988. The Skipworth's have two children, Ben and Sarah.
Brother Phillip was called to preach in his early twenties. He graduated from Florida Baptist Theological college in Graceville, Florida. He began serving as an Associate Pastor/Youth Pastor at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Samson, Alabama, but later accepted the pastorate position at Bethel Baptist Church in CItronelle, Ala.
Brother Phillip's heart call was to start a church. On January 19, 1997, Florence Baptist Church held its first service, meeting in Brother Phillip's home. Several months later, the group church moved to the Community Room at Courtview Towers on Pine Street in downtown Florence. Shortly thereafter, they purchased a building on Wood Avenue, and are still located there today.
A larger addition was built in 2000. A few months after the addition was finished, the older part of the building was damaged by a fire. That section was rebuilt and now serves as our fellowship hall and houses several of our Sunday School classes.
In 2004, we purchased a house next door to the church which is now used for church offices and Sunday School classrooms.
We have been blessed to have seen much spiritual growth over the years and we are so thankful to the Lord for all He has done!
